For the second this week, I have come across this passage from the Bible (today from One7blog http://one7blog.com) and I was wondering why. For those of you who may not be familiar it simply says :
35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.
I think it is because people have asked me how I could help certain people who they deem beneath them. They ask me how I can spend my time taking care of friends and family when they are sick and in need. The answer lies in the following-I was born and raised Catholic (with two Baptist Grandmothers closely watching) and we had to memorize the Beatitudes which, I believe are derived from The Book of Matthew (I’d have to recheck my Catechism book). But I took those words to heart because I felt if I were ever in that position I would want someone to help me. But lately, as the world leans more and more toward selfishness, those words ring truer than ever. I now truly understand the passage “There for the Grace of God Go I”. There are more people in need than ever before because of job loss or some addiction and how we respond to those in need is a true test of those who believe and act on the words of Matthew 25:35. It is hard to do when you are constantly being bombarded by negative comments and people trying to make you doubt your service to others isn’t a good thing. And in times like this you encounter a lot of people giving lip-service with no actions backing it up. I am not saying you should let people take advantage of your giving spirit, you will know when someone truly needs help. If it turns out they didn’t and they were being less than truthful about their need, do not fret because all things done in the dark will come to light. Don’t let things like that deter you from helping and being of service. Jesus didn’t make differences in people and we shouldn’t either. Helping others doesn’t have to be a grand gesture. A kind word and a smile is helping and serving others because you never know if that person had been treated badly before you encountered them. Sometimes it is the little things that make a difference and allows someone to be blessed.

Charity is one of the most important virtues. One of the most valuable lessons my mother ever taught me is always be kind to people so if they turn against you, you can walk away with your head held high and with no regrets.
