Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream that everyone would live together in peace and harmony. He dreamed that we would be of service to others. Dr. King said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?”  That question was answered this year in 2014 with thousands of people in organizations across the nation volunteering in the National Day of Service campaign. This campaign, in some cities, began on Friday January 17, 2014 and will culminate on Monday January 20, 2014 in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. One such organization, Loft Ministries in Dallas, sponsored a health fair. Volunteers came together to set up health screenings for blood pressure, diabetes, and body mass index readings (BMI). Attendees could also get information on local clinics for those with low or no incomes to obtain medical care without insurance. If people were able and interested in getting help with insurance, Affordable Care Act Navigators were available to assist with this task. On the national level, there are many organizations that are made up of nothing but volunteers. Volunteers of America is one such group fulfilling the dream of Dr. King to help people on a daily basis with everything from homelessness to job assistance.  If you wish to continue the dream and volunteer in your community, look in your local newspaper or community calendar for ideas.
