Lost Arts: Piano Tuning
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are little over 7,130 Musical Instrument Repairers and Tuners in the United States. Tuning a piano, which is made of 12,000 harmonious moving parts, requires skills not only in tuning by ear but also assembly and repairs of wood, felt, and piano wires. These skills are not learned over night and must be studied for years to achieve the title of Registered Piano Technician. The advent of the modern piano created the need for expert piano tuners, now called technicians. Brandon Lewis is one such expert.
